Supporting Veterans, Saving Dogs: Shelter to Soldier & The Hero Company Unite

In January 2026, a young Black Labrador mix named Shadow stepped into a new chapter of his life. At just one and a half years old, he had already experienced the uncertainty that many rescue dogs face. Adopted from Labs and More Rescue in San Diego County, California, Shadow could have easily been overlooked like so many others in shelters across the country.

Instead, he was given a second chance. And today, he is on a path toward something extraordinary.

Shadow is now part of the Shelter to Soldier Psychiatric Service Dog Program, where he is training to become a service dog for a veteran in need. His entire journey is being sponsored by The Hero Company, ensuring that he has every opportunity to grow, learn, and ultimately transform someone’s life.

Shelter to Soldier: Saving Lives, Two at a Time

Since 2012,Shelter to Soldier has been built on a powerful and deeply needed mission. The organization rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to become psychiatric service dogs for post-9/11 and Gulf War veterans, as well as survivors of military sexual trauma and individuals living with traumatic brain injuries. Their guiding principle is simple but profound: Saving Lives, Two at a Time.

This work exists at the intersection of two urgent realities. On one side, millions of dogs enter shelters each year. Many are euthanized due to space limitations or behavioral challenges that can often be corrected with proper training. On the other side, veterans continue to face significant mental health challenges long after their service ends. Post-traumatic stress and related conditions can impact daily life in ways that are difficult to manage alone.

Shelter to Soldier addresses both challenges at once. Through expert behavior modification and structured training, they identify dogs with the potential to become calm, reliable service animals. These dogs are then trained to provide psychological support to veterans, helping them navigate stress, anxiety, and the complexities of returning to civilian life.

The result is a partnership that restores purpose on both ends of the leash.

Shadow’s Early Progress

Shadow’s journey is still in its early stages, but his progress already reflects the thoughtful, structured approach that defines Shelter to Soldier’s program.

Since joining the training and animal care teams, Shadow has been working toward his Canine Good Citizen (CGC) milestones. This certification serves as a key foundation for a service dog’s development, focusing on obedience, temperament, and behavior in real-world settings.

Training at this stage is not just about commands. It is about building confidence, focus, and emotional stability. Public outings are a critical part of this phase, so Shadow can learn to remain calm and engaged despite distractions.

One recent highlight was visiting a local farmer’s market alongside other dogs in training, where Shadow practiced the composure and attentiveness that will one day be essential in supporting a veteran.

The Bigger Purpose Behind the Training

When fully trained, a psychiatric service dog like Shadow will be able to assist a veteran in meaningful ways. These may include interrupting anxiety episodes, providing grounding during moments of distress, creating physical space in overwhelming environments, and offering a constant, stabilizing presence.

For many veterans, this type of support can be life-changing. The bond between a service dog and their handler is built on trust, consistency, and shared experience. It is not just about training. It is about connection.

The Role of The Hero Company

Shadow’s opportunity to train and grow within this program is made possible through the support ofThe Hero Company, his Red Star Sponsor.

The Hero Company is a mission-driven brand that creates everyday products such as apparel, coffee, and grooming items, all with a purpose rooted in giving back to veterans. Their model is centered on impact. A portion of every purchase, along with direct donations, helps fund programs that provide critical support to those who have served.

Partnerships with organizations like Shelter to Soldier are a key part of that mission. Through these partnerships, The Hero Company helps cover the costs associated with rescuing, training, and caring for service dogs like Shadow. This includes everything from food and veterinary care to professional training and program support.

Importantly, organizations providing service dogs often rely heavily on external funding. The cost of training a single service dog can be high, and these programs strive to place dogs with veterans at little or no cost. That is why ongoing support matters.

The Hero Company depends on both purchases and donations to make service dog training and pairings possible. Each contribution helps ensure that more dogs can be rescued, more veterans can be supported, and more partnerships like the one Shadow is working toward can become a reality.

Changing Lives Together

Shelter to Soldier, The Hero Company, and supporters across the country are working together to create outcomes that would not be possible alone.

Shadow’s journey reminds us that transformation takes time, patience, and commitment. It also reminds us that behind every service dog is a network of people and organizations making that journey possible.

As Shadow continues his training, one thing remains certain. The path from shelter to service is not just about where a dog begins. It is about what becomes possible when that dog is given the chance to serve.
